And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
In the OT, understanding the decision of God to a lay Israelite was a difficult thing but looking through everything we understand God has a precept by which He works and through the Wisdom of God we can explain the Mind of God (for we have the mind of Christ, 1 Cor 2:16) we could even discern it.
And today I bring to you this good news- you are created to discern the will of God (Hebrew 8:11), and likewise there is a word of God for you to make you prosper in all your ways. Joshua 1:8-9.
Ability to discern the mind of God and know the right thing to do per time is a skill which you have to learn and master. It does not matter if you do not get it well, it keeps getting better, that is, you keep getting wiser. David was a man after God's heart - he never stopped until he understood God's heart.
